Graduation is a celebration of surviving the last number of years, whethe from college or high school. For Emma Sulkowicz, the celebration was not just over school, but a victory in her life.
Emma was allegedly raped in August of 2012 at Columbia University, and decided to carry her mattress everywhere with her on campus until her alleged rapist was kicked out of the school as her senior project. Her goal was not to just carry the mattress, but to receive justice. In a September 2014 video for the Columbia Daily Spectator, she said, “The piece could potentially take a day, or it could go on until I graduate.”
She was helped out by a few of her classmates, despite Columbia’s policy for graduation that “Graduates should not bring into the ceremonial area large objects which could interfere with the proceedings or create discomfort to others in close, crowded spaces shared by thousands of people.”

Emma (and a few helpers) actually took the mattress on stage! Major props to her for not giving up on her demonstration, despite the obsticle. Congrats on graduating, Emma!
